NO SLEEP TIL THE EQUINOX

Still here, yo. I have been willfully ignoring almost all of the internet except that which I need for my job - mostly Medline and PubMed searches, as well as Google. Wonderful things, those.

I have a binocular cam sitting up on top of my CPU. It can jack into my system on the sly. When the weather gets warm enough for me to go out on extended hikes again (not this -30 windchill crap this latitude seems to attract, damn Alberta clippers), I think I'll be doing that photoblog of Kettle Moraine and environs. Oh, and probably parts of England and maybe even Scotland too. You'll see. Maybe.

Until then, contemplate this: I recently started a jogging and running program, along with weight training and swimming. For those of you who know me, this might not seem too surprising, given that I tend to destress in very physical ways. Well. Along with my goal of hiking the Appalachian Trail in or about 2010 give or take a few years, I have a new goal - I want to be able to run, I mean REALLY run, by this summer. I can go three 10-minute miles now at a stretch, which is better than I thought I could do, especially considering I only stopped smoking my piddly 4 or 5 cigarettes a day 2 weeks ago and haven't even hiked since November or so. Huff and puff, y'all. After that, it's sprints plus walks around an 18-lap track for another mile. So 4 miles a day for 6 days a week, PLUS swimming 15 laps of the pool at the Y, PLUS the weights...yeah. Got my new shoes, got my doubled-up skin-tight sports bras, got my stubbornness and determination, so I can do this. I'm going to be a runner as well as a hiker and swimmer.

Now, if I could only acquire a mountain bike or a racing bike (my other other favorite sporty-outdoorsy activity aside from foot travel and swimming)...do we see Julie doing a triathlon by age 40? Maybe AFTER the Appalachian Trail hike. Long-term upshot is, I'm a closet jock and never even knew until I started working out again.

Josh thoroughly approves, apparently. He called me Wonder Woman once. Coming from such a comics geek as him (I say that endearingly, of course), it means a lot. I'm in no danger of losing my, um, feminine attributes regardless of how hard I work out.

And I am SO not looking at the scale. When I met my trainer, I told her I don't want to know how much I weigh, I don't care, I'm not supposed to care, if I start to care again it'll kill me, etc. She said okay and went from there. Likely as not, because I can tell where I've put on some muscle anyway already, I'm HEAVIER than I look. When I blow all the air our of my lungs in the pool, I sink like a stone and then hover about 2 feet off the pool floor - that's a good sign. Muscle is heavy. I have a large frame. Try to lift me and you'll be surprised. Ha. Take that, skeleton lollipop girls!

I am Julie's delusions of being Wonder Woman.
