CAUSE FOR MOURNING

My maternal grandfather is on his way out. End-stage Alzheimer's, leukemia, broken bones and stupid, selfish arguments about healthcare power of attorney have taken their toll, mostly on him. For my part, I did what I could - provided information, gave my mom the script for talking to the doctors, told her what it all meant, and basically, through my mom, told my aunt to back the hell off and let people who know what they're doing make the decisions.

As a result, now he's in home hospice, receiving comfort measures (ie hydration and high doses of narcotic painkillers) only. I mean, 88 years is a long time to live, and we've been saying goodbye for about 10 of those already. Imagine the selfishness and cruelty of putting someone whose cognitive state is that of approximately a 6-month-old child, who can't even tell anyone what kind of pain they're in, through chemotherapy and bone marrow biopsies and other painful, unnecessary procedures. Heavy sigh.

My grandma is having a hard time, and I can't say I blame her, really. If I put Josh and myself in that situation after having been married for almost 60 years, I'd be ready to do myself in right alongside him, but loathe to let him go at all.

C'est la vie.

CAUSES FOR CELEBRATION

I came home from working out today (argh, a KILLER! 5 miles plus double sets of my weight routine) and, as I got out of my car, I heard and saw something that nearly made me fall down - a flock of redwing blackbirds. Can it be? I mean, the sun only started rising before 7:00 a.m. 3 days ago. Is the light right? The temperature, while biddable, is certainly not amenable to marsh birds. But STILL!!! I almost choked up, I was so overwhelmed by the thought of an early spring. Maybe it was also because the last few weeks have been rather difficult all around.

Mo turns 7 in a couple of weeks. We're taking some of her friends to see "Whales" at the IMAX in Milwaukee, probably to hang out in the butterfly garden (I mean, little girls and butterflies go together like...like...puppies and more puppies) and then home for lovely little petit fours cakes (that I will make, TYVM) and prezzies. My present to her was signing her up for gymnastics lessons and a couple of very wee-femme leotards. Dang if we're not going to turn that girl into some sort of flippy swimmy dancy machine, yo.

So that's all for now. You can expect another announcement of some sort or another soon, but we're not telling what it is.
