BRYOPHYTIC TRAVELS

I went to Beulah Bog again this morning, and took a bunch of pictures of the tamaracks, the pond, and emerging pitcher plants. It was lovely. Again, I wanted to stay, but my time outside was limited so I took it all in as long as I could, and headed out sooner than I would have liked.

On the way back up to the parking lot, my eye was caught by a patch of something small, green and branchy that looked almost like baby pine sprouts. I took a closer look, and found a little patch of sphagnum moss embedded in some other moss. There were no other sphagnums growing here, and considering it was a dry slope with deciduous trees, that's not surprising. What is surprising is that the sphagnum moss made it this far up the hill.

As I mentioned before, Beulah Bog is somewhat out of place down here in the Kettle Moraine territory. It really belongs much further up north. It's surrounded by typical rolling grassy oak savannah hills, and the flora unique to bogs generally stay put within their relatively little glaciated bowl. All except for this little pioneer. I doubt that the bog is creeping up the hill, but this wee patch was started by chance and proper conditions. Doubtless the whole multi-acre bog was started that way. Here's a low, wet, slightly acidic spot and here are some wind-borne sphagnum spores. Some force of nature takes over and lo, we have a relict biome.

Little things like this are a major reason why I keep exploring the same territories over and over. They are never the same, especially after the change of seasons. It makes me happy to think that even lowly lifeforms such as bryophytes are taking new space, no matter how temporarily, and oddly encourages me to do the same. Maybe I'll take root somewhere else amenable soon by chance. Maybe Josh, Mo, and I will establish a little enclave of whatever it is we represent in an environment that is only minimally hospitable and we'll make it work.

Come to think of it, having our little wacko cohesive family in such a homogeneous, conservative, bedroom community as Mukwonago is analogous.

We are the bog invading the savannah.

Well, there goes the neighborhood.

THROUGH THE MIRROR

All right. I admit, somewhat ashamedly, I watched the latest episode of The Swan. I got good and angry. I don't need to deconstruct it. Anyone who knows me knows exactly what I have to say about this.

Morgan watched it with me. She oohed and aahed over the dresses and their hair, but that was it.

I sent her off to bed with this admonition: Don't EVER let anyone tell you you're not good enough, inside or outside. That's sound advice for a 7-year-old, and I need to take it to heart as well. It's sound advice for everyone.

Don't let anyone tell you you're not good enough, and if they do, feel free to kick their sorry ass.
